As many as 100 animals are killed each year on the open roads of The New Forest. The New Forest Trust is supporting all the organisations who are trying to reduce this number in many ways. One of the most effective of these, is fitting reflective collars to livestock. This is normally done by the Agisters and the owners of the ponies at the annual drifts across the New Forest.
Is has been proven that the likelihood of an animal being hit at night is greatly reduced once one of these collars has been carefully fitted.
The New Forest Trust makes an annual donation towards the significant cost of these lifesaving collars.
One of the most asked questions, by visitors to The New Forest when they contribute to the New Forest Trust or the Visitor Gift Scheme, is where their money is going. Reflective collars are a very good example of how this money is used in a vital way.
