Reflective stickers for Pony visibility

The Trust funded a trial of reflective stickers to go on the bottoms of ponies and donkey’s to make them visible at night.

A lot of animals are fitted with reflective collars but they cannot be seen if the animal is facing away from an oncoming vehicle, this trail aimed to find a suitable material that would stay on the ponies and help make them visible at night.

Reflective Collars

The Trust previously paid for the purchase of reflective collars to make commoning livestock more visible at night, it has been proven that the likelihood of an animal being hit at night is greatly reduced once a collar has been carefully fitted. This is normally done by the Agisters or the owners of the ponies at the annual drifts across the New Forest.

New Forest Woodcock

A grant was given to the New Forest Woodcock group to purchase four radio tags to follow the birds undetected.

Woodcock are highly secretive, seldom seen in the woodland, and little is known about their daily behaviour and breeding habitats in the New Forest.

The New Forest has always been a UK stronghold for Woodcock and the project was set up to study this enigmatic species in a wild and unique landscape.
